In accordance with the MTBA Technical Regulations (effective 1 January 2020), the following eligibility criteria applies for National Championship events:

Only Australian Citizens and/or non-Australian Citizens under the age of 18 who have resided in Australia since 1 January of the year of competition are permitted to compete in the Australian Championships, receive awards and any applicable UCI points. Any rider claiming a podium position without satisfying this criteria will be automatically disqualified.

Important Information before Registering

  • In order to complete your entry in the 2020 Mountain Bike Australia National Championships (March 11 - 15), you will first be required to hold a Financial MTBA Membership (Race or Recreation), valid at the date of the event. If your membership expires before or during the event, you must first renew your membership.

Statement on Under 13 Participation

From January 2020, MTBA will no longer be awarding National Champion jerseys to Under 13’s in any National Championships category. In consultation with the MTBA Sport and Technical Management Advisory Commission (MAC - Sport & Technical), a decision has been made to:

  1. Align practices in relation to Junior participation and competition with worlds best practice and contemporary sport science research and evidence;
  2. Bring National Championships operations into line with MTBA Technical Regulations, providing clarity for members and stakeholders and adhering to our adopted duty of care for riders, officials, volunteers and the general public;
  3. Align appropriately with our adopted Guidelines on Junior Participation.

U13's will now be provided with a range of opportunities to gain experience, skills and participate at National Championship events but in the form of "support" races rather than being categorised as actual National Championship events. The objective is to use these events to support and mentor young riders at these events in a different format than previous.

This change will assist by removing the requirement of full race membership to participate as is the case for National Championship event entry. Thus Race Event Licences and Free Trial Memberships will be acceptable for U13 registration in support events during National Championship events.

At the National Championships in Bright this coming March (11-15), XCC, XCO, DHI and XCR support races will be provided together with an U13 participation ride for beginners (balance bikes etc). Other than for the participation ride, all events will be provided Tier 1 National Cup status.

A specific race time for the U13 DHI category, has been provided for in the schedule and we are currently working with the host organising committee to also provide specific U13 practise time. This information will be publicised as details are confirmed.

MTBA are committed to providing as much opportunity for our juniors as possible to race, compete and develop their MTB skills but are conscious of doing this in line with worlds best practice with regards to rider safety, junior development and our competition objectives, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure we apply the highest level of safety and care for our junior athletes well-being.

More information will follow and MTBA are excited by this new step in the development and participation opportunities for riders under 13 years wishing to compete and be a part of the National Mountain bike season and especially our premier events.
